SIMULATION

A key part of creating an endless game mode was designing a living world where factions rise and fall dynamically. I built a simulation in Google Sheets to prototype and visualize the territory control mechanics.

Endless Story Mode Faction Simulation

The Rules

  1. 1.A random Faction is selected each "turn."
  2. 2.That Faction can only attack in a territory that it already has majority control over and adjacent territories (or in a territory it has some control over, if no majority control is present).
  3. 3.A Faction can't attack itself.
  4. 4.It's most likely that when selected, a Faction will attack territories that they have majority, but not total, control over.
  5. 5.If a defeated Faction is selected, it may attack anywhere on the board.

By allowing any Faction to be selected each turn (instead of equal rotation among all), random patterns of domination and submission occur. This allows the rise and fall of each Faction, while preventing complete takeovers or total annihilation, giving the player a constantly evolving world to fight in, and eventually rule over.
